Morbid obesity is a growing epidemic in twenty-first century. An elevated body mass index (BMI) is associated with premature death and increased risk for heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, and gallbladder disease. Medical therapy for morbid obesity often is not adequate, and surgical intervention is required.
Surgery has proven to be the only effective long-term treatment for morbid obesity. Patients are eligible for surgical intervention if their BMI is > 40 kilograms per height in meters squared (kg/m2), or if they have a BMI of 35 kg/m2 with significant comorbidities and have failed medical intervention.
Bariatric surgery has evolved with the advent of laparoscopy and mechanical staplers. Currently, weight-loss procedures can be devided into restrictive and malabsorptive procedures. Restrictive weight-loss procedures include gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric plication and intragastric balloon(BIB).
Malabsorptive procedures include the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and the biliopancreatic diversion. The treatmentmethod is chosen individually taking account patient specific parameters like age, patient overall health status, body mass index, co-morbiditys, patient eating haubits and lifestyle.

Subsequently after 10 years, laparoscopic s leeve gastrectomy was used as a bridging procedure in super-morbidly obese patients, usually followed by a definite procedure as laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric […]

Gastric plication is a new bariatric procedure. Laparoscopic greater curvature plication(LGCP) has gained popularity within the last 2 years because it is a restrictive procedure that reduces gastric volume without the need for stomach resection. LGCP was first described by Wilkinson in 1981. LGCP successfully reduces gastric volume by plication of the greater curvature without […]
We insert two types of gastric balloons: 1. Water inflated intragastric balloon inserted for at least 6 months (Allergan) 2. It helps people to lose […]
